Learning Theories

The Design Framework that resonates best for me is the Wisdom Community Framework.  The purpose of this framework is to assist the learner in the transformational learning by helping to develop a Wisdom Community, innovate knowledge and mentor and learner support while in an online learning environment.  This is based on a "Cycle of Inquiry" module design and a "Spiral of Inquiry" program design (Gunawardena, et al., 2006).  At the heart of the WisCom Community Model is communication and collaboration between learners, as well as the social presence of the instructor.

Learning theories help to guide the decision making process during the design process and provides the foundation for achieving consistency between the learning theory, the instructional theory and the design framework (Morrison, Kemp, Ross, & Kalman, 2013).  When aligning these three processes, it is more likely that everything will flow better and achieve the desired learning goals and objectives.

Many learning theories will encompass my eLearning Design Framework – WisCom. The theories will include:  experiential learning, transformational learning, Knowles Adult Learning, social presence, and socio-cultural/socio-constructivist.

With diverse backgrounds, cultures and experience, it is important that these factors be considered when building the course.  This is why it is good to use a variety of learning theories and design models within the course or within the modules.  Using a survey to define their background in technology and the level of education they have helps to design a learning experience that is not to challenging and not too boring (Pappas, 2014).
